The problem is that Richlite is a low end fretboard material, so it's kind of out of place on Custom level guitars. It's just fake wood. I agree with you on this too. They are a rubber/plastic substance, made out of resin. Not wood, at all. They look okay, and they shouldn't make any difference in the sound and playability of the guitar.
